In short, when properly used, a felling lever enables you to saw a tree without worrying about it jamming. It reduces the possibility of back strain while increasing the chances of landing the tree. It offers improved accuracy than using wedges alone.

As you’ll be well aware, the person most at risk of injury “the person doing the cutting.” A couple of cms can be the difference between a tree falling safely or falling on to a property. Why risk it? A felling lever enables you to guide the tree away from your property. This saves money, stress and ultimately saves lives.

How does it work?

Once there’s a notch in the tree, a felling lever comes out to play. Simply saw until there’s enough room to fit the lift plate. This prevents the tree from settling or falling backwards. Likewise, ensure it is not at an angle and the lever points in the direction of the fall. Ensure that you have inserted it far enough so that you get the maximum leverage possible. Moreover, ensure that is supported by hardwood and not bark. Then begin cutting again making sure the chain does not strike the lever and there’s enough room to hinge.

Now begin levering the tree, ensure that you evenly distribute the tree keeping your back straight & knees bent. Begin to lift with your legs keeping both hands on the lever. Once it begins to fall – step back.

If your tree has been upwinded, the felling lever comes into its own. Cut a notch in the back of the wood, then insert the felling lever and remove the saw. Make sure you leave a corner unsawn for support. Then once the lever is supporting the tree, saw through the corner support at a downward angle.

In this article, we will discuss the log sawhorse and advise you on how to carefully select the best product for you.

What is a Sawhorse?

A sawhorse, also known as a Mule, is most commonly a beam with four legs used to support wood for sawing. Two sawhorses can be used to create a scaffold that is then able to support wood for storage purposes. However, modern sawhorses now have a metal base meaning they are more sturdy and will last for longer. 

There is a wide variety of designs available, with the folding variety being the most commonly used in small businesses due to its versatility and ability to double as a workbench. However, this variety can be difficult to store and a standard horse can be used in this way with the addition of a sheet of plywood or a thick hard surface if secured properly. 

When buying, you need to keep three things in mind. 

The Capacity. 

Understanding the maximum log length and diameter that they are capable of withstanding is very important when choosing your product. It is better to buy a sawhorse that is capable of holding more than you may need to make sure that you do not damage the product. Or keep in mind that you may need to adjust the number of logs that you plan to use at any one time. 

Do You Value Speed? Or Strength?

Something to consider is your working process. If you require a heavy-duty log sawhorse to split a single trunk, then look no further than the ultimate sawhorse which can handle logs up to 6 meters long and 300KG in weight while still being easily portable.

One of the primary features of the Sawmill is the two guide rails & two supporting C-shaped clamps. These clamps properly support the entire length of the chainsaw through the entirety of the cut. This ensures you will chainsaw a perfect cut every time. Direct competitors to the UWWS only support the chainsaw on one side, meaning the chainsaw will begin to naturally produce a lob-sided cut. This is due to the immense amount of power generated by the chainsaw. 

The two C-shaped clamps are joined together by a connecting support bar which acts as a handle and allows the user to seamlessly direct, ease and pivot the chainsaw through the wood. The bar stands at an acute angle behind the chainsaw, carefully positioning you in the optimal position to direct the force applied from the chainsaw in any way you see fit to efficiently perform the fastest cut. 

The unique ability to pivot the chainsaw provides improved control and efficiency of the cut. Competitor products which lack this feature demand the chainsaw cut through the whole log at the same time. This means a longer time cutting without providing the chainsaw any relief of power.

EXTENSIONS

There are an effective range of extensions available for the Universal Sawmill to further expand the possibilities of the already impressive and varied tool.

Vertical Attachment

The Vertical Attachment allows you to chainsaw vertically as well as horizontally. Perfect for milling planks or wood sleepers. The vertical attachment efficiently provides all the versatility and accuracy of the horizontal guide bar but allows you to chainsaw the sides of the wood without re-positioning the log. You can chainsaw three sides of the wood with no necessary adjustment of the log required.

Begin your process by taking off the top of the log using the standard horizontal guide, then attach the vertical clamp and chainsaw the sides, cutting under the bark. This, in turn, means less downtime sharpening the chain.

Once you chainsaw one side of the log using the vertical attachment, you can simply turn the attachment around and instantly begin chainsawing the other side of the log. No adjustment to the log is required.

This process can be performed using minor quick changes to the vertical attachment (which only requires seconds) to mill a log into wood planks, without requiring any adjustment to the log.

Promptly cut a whole square beam from a log, using only one adjustment.

Wheel Attachment

We additionally offer wheel attachments which provide even more convenience and portability. You can simply pack all of the equipment up into the base stand and then easily transport the equipment at your own pace without needing to pack everything away.

Extension Bars

Extension bars are available upon request. The stand has a maximum extension bar length of up to 4 metres long. Extension bars up to 6 metres long are possible when used free from the stand.

These can be attached to the base stand, or you can operate them portable and attach them directly to the wood you wish to chainsaw. They nevertheless provide the same perfect chainsaw cut quality as the standard package. No quality is lost in the length of the bars.

All of our electric log splitters (FM5, FM8, FM10 & FM16) are now supplied with a work bench and safety cage that meet all European safety legislation.

The cages are designed to catch logs and debris, making splitting logs safer.

Our cages allow you to split larger logs than other safety cages. The cages on the FM5 & FM8 allow a maximum diameter of 300mm. The cages on the FM10 & FM16 allow a maximum diameter of 400mm. Typically other manufacturers only allow 250mm diameter.
